"Dicebreaker" Questions for the NHES
Happy Monday!
At SHAPE Cleveland last month, Jessica Matheson and I presented a session called, "50 Tips in 50 Minutes!" We covered 50 different tools, strategies, and resources to help teachers improve their teaching in health education.
We had an entire section on using dice based on Jessica's Slow Chat Health blog post from last year. After working to put our presentation together and hearing Jess's ideas, I knew I wanted to use dice more in my classroom. With the launch of the new National Health Education Standards, I saw a perfect opportunity for a new routine in my health class.
The concept is nothing new, and it's easy to implement. Students roll the dice and share their perspective about whichever question matches the number on their dice. In this case, all the questions get students talking about the skill they'll be learning in a new unit.
To save time, I used ChatGPT for help. I placed the one-sentence description of each National Health Education Standard into the prompt and asked ChatGPT to create six questions. Then, I had ChatGPT rewrite them for a middle school reading level. I further modified any questions if needed. I threw them into Canva, and now, I have question sets to use at the start of new units that will get students conversing about each skill with their groups.
I'm not saying these questions will have your students thinking they're in pair-a-dice, but hopefully things don't get too dicey (insert eye rolls and groans here) if you use these. Click the big blue button to access and download a PDF of "Dicebreaker" Questions for the dimensions of wellness and all eight National Health Education Standards.
What types of resources would help you level up your teaching? Reply and let me know!
