Free Webinars: SEL & the Updated National Standards!
Hello Reader, On-demand webinars are awesome because you can watch them whenever they fit into your schedule. You can watch them at your own pace, rewind or fast forward as needed, and take from them only what you need. With a few weeks of the summer left, they're also a great way to dip your toe back into thinking about the upcoming school year. Many educators are beginning to organize their back-to-school plans, and two things will probably end up on those lists: building a strong classroom community and updating lessons and assessments to align with the new National Health Education Standards. Read on for details about free webinars on both of those topics! Free Webinars for Social and Emotional LearningOne element of building a classroom community is embracing social-emotional learning. And, if I'm being honest, that can make teachers uncomfortable. SEL is a hot-button topic these days, and teaching SEL requires adults to be vulnerable. If we want our students to put themselves out there in our classroom, then we have to be willing to do the same, too. What can help us do that? Character Strong Webinars can help! I'm not affiliated with Character Strong in any way, and I'm not being compensated for this newsletter, but I've found their resources helpful, so I'm sharing them with you. The number of free resources they push out to educators is remarkable. Yes, some of them are "sales-pitchy" because they'll often link a product or curriculum that they've developed to address the topic they're covering in the webinar. Even so, their webinars are full of great information, including background research, practical advice, and useful strategies for classroom and school use. Character Strong has over 150 recorded webinars on their website, for free, that you can access. They cover topics such as:
If you browse through their recorded webinars, my bet is you'll find something worthwhile. Use them as part of a professional practice goal, or pick one as a department to watch together before you make a plan to implement what you've learned. āYou can access all of Character Strong's recorded webinars here. Character Strong was recently designated as a CASEL SELect Program. Free Webinar: The Updated National Health Education StandardsEarlier this spring, Andy Milne texted Scott Todnem and me: "Have either of you watched the Health Webinar 101 that SHAPE launched for the new standards? It's the clearest explanation that I've seen on the way the new standards evolved." I trust Andy's judgment, so I finally checked out the webinar in preparation for some upcoming work with the updated NHES. I'll tell you this: I feel way more informed about the new NHES than I did before I watched the webinar. I came away from the webinar with specific details to share with others about the new standards. Knowing the rationale behind the changes will make it easier for me to update my lessons and units, and to have conversations about the updated standards with others. āYou can access the free webinar here. You need to be a SHAPE America member to view it. Once you log into the webinar, you can download a PDF of the slides, but I suggest watching the whole thing. Thanks for reading! If you have any questions, please reply to this email, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. If you find any of these webinars helpful, please let me know.
